An ancient and intensely flavored coffee from Yemen, known for its winey acidity, complex spice, and chocolate notes.
Yemen is one of the oldest coffee-growing regions in the world, and 'Mocha' (or Mokka) refers historically to the port city, not chocolate, although chocolate notes are common. Grown on ancient terraces in the rugged Haraaz mountains, these coffees are almost exclusively dry-processed (natural) due to water scarcity. This results in an intense, complex, and often wild flavor profile. Expect strong notes of dried fruit (raisins, dates), a distinct wine-like acidity, rich dark chocolate, and exotic spices like cardamom or cinnamon. An underlying earthy or leathery note adds depth. Yemeni coffees offer a unique, historical taste experience.
Dawairi represents one of the ancient, indigenous heirloom varieties originating from Yemen. It is known for its smaller, rounded beans and its ability to thrive in the dry, high-altitude conditions of the Yemeni mountains. In the cup, Dawairi often contributes to the classic Yemeni profile of complex spices, dried fruit, and a winey, full-bodied character.
Tuffahi , another distinct Yemeni heirloom, has a name that translates to "apple-like," referring to the shape of its cherries. Like other traditional Yemeni coffees, it is grown on ancient stone terraces and is highly adapted to the arid environment. Tuffahi is prized for contributing to a sweet and complex cup with notes of crisp fruit, chocolate, and warm spices.
Udaini , a celebrated heirloom from the Audain district in Yemen, is one of the country's most sought-after varieties. It is recognized for its small, dense beans that produce an intensely aromatic and flavorful cup. Udaini is often associated with a rich, syrupy body and complex notes of dark chocolate, sweet spices, and dried fruits.
