The automatic drip coffee machine is the workhorse of coffee brewing in many homes and offices around the world. It automates the process of heating water and dripping it over a bed of ground coffee in a filter basket. While often seen as basic, a great cup of drip coffee is achievable by focusing on the fundamentals: using fresh, quality beans, the correct grind size, and the right ratio of coffee to water.
(medium grind)
Place a paper filter in the machine's brew basket.
Grind your coffee to a medium consistency, similar to table salt, and add it to the filter. Gently shake to level the grounds.
Fill the machine's reservoir with 640ml of cold, filtered water.
Place the carafe in position and turn on the machine to start the brew cycle.
Once the brew cycle is complete, remove the carafe from the hot plate to prevent the coffee from tasting burnt. Serve immediately.
Use a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio as a starting point for a well-balanced brew.
Rinse the paper filter with hot water before adding grounds to remove any papery taste.
Note: For better results, look for a machine that is SCA Certified, which ensures it brews at the proper temperature and time.
