AeroPress (Inverted Method)

Medium Difficulty
3 min
Serves 1

The AeroPress has a cult following for its portability, durability, and incredible versatility. The inverted (upside-down) method prevents any coffee from dripping through before you're ready to plunge, allowing for a full-immersion steep similar to a French Press but with the clarity of a paper filter. This technique gives you total control over brew time for a consistently delicious result.

You'll Need

Ingredients

  • Coffee Beans - 15g

    (medium-fine grind)

  • Hot Water - 240g (ml)

    (between 85-92°C / 185-198°F)

Equipment

  • AeroPress Coffee Maker
  • AeroPress Paper Filter (or metal)
  • Sturdy Mug or Carafe
  • Kettle
  • Digital Scale with Timer
  • Coffee Grinder

Instructions

  1. 1

Insert the plunger into the AeroPress chamber, stopping at the #4 mark. Flip it upside down so the numbers are inverted, and place it on your scale. Tare to zero.

  2. 2

Add your 15g of medium-fine ground coffee into the chamber.

  3. 3

Start your timer and add 240g of hot water. Stir gently for 10 seconds to ensure all grounds are saturated.

  4. 4

Place a paper filter in the filter cap and wet it. Screw the filter cap securely onto the chamber. Let the coffee steep until the timer reaches 1:30.

  5. 5

Carefully flip the entire AeroPress assembly onto your sturdy mug. Press the plunger down slowly and steadily for about 30 seconds until you hear a hissing sound. Stop pressing, and enjoy.

Pro Tips

Be careful when flipping the AeroPress; ensure the filter cap is on tight and your mug is on a stable surface.

Don’t press all the way through the hissing sound. This last bit of liquid can be bitter.

Experiment! The AeroPress is famous for its flexibility. Try different grind sizes, water temperatures, and brew times to find what you like.
